If this section of the Wikipedia article on Target Disk Mode is correct, the PC on which they run Macrium would have to have "extra drivers such as MacDrive, TransMac, MacDisk, or HFSExplorer"-in addition to a FireWire or Thunderbolt port. I'd appreciate if someone can satisfy my curiosity by explaining how asbath's IT desktop services folks could "do a Macrium backup, and just restore that backup image to all Macs that need to be imaged." Little bit of help, please? What are my options? However, everybody seems to say that Apple doesn't provide disk images, instead they went the recovery partition route. I wouldn't be against getting an ISO for either version, but I just figured I'd try to upgrade to the latest possible version. So how does one go about acquiring a DVD/ISO image of Mac OS? It doesn't need to be the latest and greatest, but hopefully the last version that is supported on this Mac Pro 3.1 hardware? I think Yosemite was the last one?įor what it's worth, I'm told that the OS version installed is either Lion or Mountain Lion. However, it doesn't look like Apple has any "Recovery DVDs" in the same way that say Dell or Lenovo provides for their machines. The next part is that I see El Capitan does not support this machine, so purchasing through the App Store won't work either - dammit. From some research, I've determined that there's no such thing as a "key" or "license" in the same way that Windows works - good. I've been a Windows user my entire life, so I'm unfamiliar with how Mac OS X OS images and licensing works. What I'd like to do is remove all but 1 functioning disks and re-install Mac OS X so that I have a functioning Mac. It says that it's got a 1.5TB hard disk, when there are 3x 500GB drives physically installed. Currently the drives are in spanned RAID mode, from what I can gather from the Command+R > Disk Utility read out. I suspect it's the RAID card that's faulty or the first of the spanned disks is dead. The system doesn't boot, instead it's flashing the folder + question mark, which according to support docs means it cannot find the OS. One of the drives is dying if not already dead. I managed to get my hands on a Mac Pro 3.1, and I'm wanting to play around with it. Write it to disk afterwards rename the file extension you changed. bin which one the RAW image writer tool needs You will need a RAW image tool that can write. Then with confidence if needed you will be able to do the same with a real physical hard disk away from Virtual Machine on a physical PC. Do below or first try in VMWare maybe with a Hirens disc or similar in XP mode or Win7 or by using Dos Tools to write the image to a virtual disk. This information below will erase all data from your hard drive. Unless you know of a converter that can do this on the fly or convert the file before and keep that original as is. Highlight the disk in Virtual Machine Settings in the Disk information panel what does it read.ĭisk space is preallocated (This is -FLAT.vdk type and is what you need to write it to to disk as a RAW image)ĭisk space is not preallocated = This is growable and would need to be expanded to full size before it can be written as a disk image to disk.
